T&T Week 3 - Lecture Review: Drugs & Society -Derek Chignell (PhD)

Image
This week’s Drugs & Society lecture, presented by Dr. Derek Chignell, was a unique blend of faith, science, and compassion. Dr. Chignell, once a chemistry professor at Wheaton and now serving with Youth with a Mission, brought both depth and heart to the subject. He opened with the Lord’s Prayer, sung in Swahili—a moving start as I took in the powerful music and inspiring visuals from the trailer for the video game Civilization IV. I own the game but haven’t really sat down to play it; now, I’m intrigued to give it a try. Dr. Chignell introduced the topic by defining “drug,” preemptively covering the concepts of beneficial drugs and drugs of abuse. Moving through the history of medicine, he introduced us to ethnobotany and traditional medicine, sharing his experiences with practices like acupuncture. We then explored the development of drugs like morphine and penicillin, as well as four key synthetic drug discoveries—antibiotics, antiseptics, anesthetics, and analgesics—that transf...

Geopolitical Analysis: Iran Faces Tough Choices in Response to Israeli Strikes

Image
News  Summary: The recent Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military targets present a strategic challenge for Iran, as its response could escalate tensions or reveal its vulnerabilities. Israel’s targeted attacks on missile facilities reflect longstanding security concerns about Iran’s influence and intentions. Iran, under pressure both militarily and economically, faces a dilemma: respond to demonstrate strength or hold back to avoid potential backlash. Geopolitical Analysis: Israel’s stance towards Iran echoes its historical concerns for survival in a volatile region, where it perceives powerful regional actors as existential threats. Israel’s advocacy for U.S. intervention, as seen previously in Iraq, aligns with its desire to reduce potential adversaries. However, as recent administrations show less inclination toward direct military action, Israel's tactics may now focus on self-initiated precision strikes to contain Iranian influence. Iran, on the other hand, views nuclear cap...

Trump’s Joe Rogan Interview: Perspectives from Two Sources

Image
I recently watched the full conversation between Joe Rogan and former President Trump on Rogan’s podcast, which garnered record-breaking views. After reading coverage from The Guardian and Fox News , I wanted to share my perspective. But before that, let’s take a quick look on how each outlet reported on the podcast. Summary : Here’s what The Guardian has to say: The Guardian’s Sam Wolfson describes Trump’s three-hour appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast as strategically aimed at engaging young, skeptical male voters. The article critiques the interview as largely unchallenged, giving Trump free rein to rehash familiar themes and paint himself as an outsider. Wolfson suggests the relaxed platform could strengthen Trump’s appeal among those increasingly wary of traditional political messaging. Here’s what Fox News has to say: Fox News highlighted Rogan’s reflections, where he expressed admiration for Trump’s humor, stamina, and resilience. Rogan saw Trump’s style as a unique mix of busine...

Awakenings (1990): A Journey of Love, Loss, and the Human Spirit

Image
Awakenings invites us into a world of compassion and wonder, led by Dr. Malcolm Sayer (Robin Williams), a character based on neurologist Dr. Oliver Sacks. In a 1969 hospital, Dr. Sayer discovers patients locked in catatonic states for decades, remnants of a past encephalitis epidemic. Among them is Leonard Lowe (Robert De Niro), whose "awakening" after an experimental drug, L-Dopa, opens a brief but powerful window into the essence of life itself. Through Leonard’s re-emergence, the film explores what it means to be fully alive, highlighting themes of human connection, vulnerability, and the preciousness of consciousness. Watching Awakenings , I was deeply moved by both main characters. Robert De Niro’s portrayal of Leonard was profound, shifting my perspective on his range as an actor. Leonard’s “awakening” felt almost as if I was witnessing someone’s soul stepping back from another dimension. The character seemed to transcend physical boundaries, almost like a science-fict...

Geopolitical Analysis: U.S. Investigates Leaked Israeli Strike Plans on Iran

Image
News  Summary In recent news, the U.S. government has launched an investigation into the leak of classified intelligence documents detailing Israel's military preparations for a potential strike on Iran. The documents, originating from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, were leaked on the encrypted Telegram app, raising serious concerns about security and intelligence-sharing. These documents reportedly describe Israel’s preparations for a retaliatory strike following Iran’s missile attack on October 1, which marks the second direct attack on Israel in six months. U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed the investigation, and the Pentagon is looking into how such sensitive information made its way into the public domain. This leak, revealing detailed military strategies, puts both U.S. and Israeli security at risk, while exposing ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran. Analysis The situation between Israel and Iran is emblematic of the broader geopolitical struggle in...

News Report: SpaceX's Milestone: Catching a Rocket in Midair and Launching the Europa Clipper

Image
In mid-October 2024, SpaceX achieved two remarkable feats. First, the Superheavy first stage booster of Starship was caught midair using the "Mechazilla" arms during the fifth test flight. This was followed by the successful launch of the Europa Clipper, which will explore Jupiter’s moon in search of signs of life. The most significant aspect of these events was the midair catch of the Superheavy booster. After separation from the Starship second stage, the booster descended back toward the launch pad, and instead of using traditional landing legs, it was plucked out of the sky by the Mechazilla arms. This was a first in space history and a key step toward SpaceX’s vision of fully reusable rockets. The difficulty of this catch cannot be overstated. The booster had to be controlled precisely during its descent with real-time adjustments using grid fins and engines. The Mechazilla arms then had to catch the booster with pinpoint timing, preventing damage and ensuring the rocket...

Lecture: History & Philosophy of Science - Andrew Hodder

Image
History & Philosophy of Science - Andrew Hodder Andrew Hodder, who serves as the base leader at YWAM Madison, is a captivating speaker with a background in physics and a passion for astronomy. In his lecture on the History and Philosophy of Science, he explored the evolution of paradigms that have shaped humanity’s understanding of the universe. Something the Lord Made – A Reflection

Image
It was my first time watching Something the Lord Made , and I was truly moved by the film. I found myself tearing up at several points. The performances were outstanding, especially Alan Rickman’s and Yasiin Bey’s, with Rickman delivering a particularly powerful portrayal. The film’s depiction of the real-life events stayed mostly faithful to the actual story, capturing the essence of the historical relationship between Dr. Alfred Blalock and Vivien Thomas. It reflected the challenges of race relations in the West up until recent decades, yet it also showed how things were beginning to change. Despite the unfairness of the times, the movie portrays how compassion and creativity broke through those barriers, revealing how God’s presence can be seen in the lives and talents of the two main characters. What also stood out to me was Dr. Blalock’s adventurous spirit. He decided to move forward with a groundbreaking surgery, a decision that went against the social norms and expectations of t...

Lecture: Introduction to Biblical Worldview - Emmanuel Entee

Image
The topic by Emmanuel Entee introduces the concept of a biblical worldview by focusing on the foundational themes of creation, the fall, redemption, and restoration. Drawing from Genesis 1-3, the lecture explains the narrative of how the world was created, how humanity fell into sin, and God’s plan for redemption. The lecture emphasizes the Imago Dei (the belief that humans are made in the image of God), the purpose of human life in God’s creation, and the ultimate restoration of all things in God's plan. These themes serve as the foundation of a biblical worldview and shape how individuals understand their relationship to God, community, and the world. What stood out to me the most was the art piece by Sergiy Shkanov. At first glance, the painting seemed simple and mundane. However, as the lecture progressed, I found myself paying more attention to it each day and started to see deeper meaning in both the linear and cyclical nature of creation and the order and complexity of God’s...

The Book, the Scholars, and Kings: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow – My Thoughts on the Movie King James Bible: The Book That Changed the World by David Starkey

Image
What I remembered most from the movie is how the young Scottish king, James VI, inherited the English throne from Queen Elizabeth I, his cousin, and made the significant decision to commission, or at least allow, a new translation of the Bible. His aim was to bring unity between different Christian factions in England—mainly the Anglicans/monarchy supporters and the Puritans/reformists. King James’ diligent supervision and the rigorous scholarship from both sides ultimately led to the completion of the King James Bible, a work that has become well known throughout the Western world. The first thing that struck me while watching the movie was how much more of a drama it felt like than a documentary. I also noticed that King James wasn't portrayed as appropriately aged towards the later years of his life, with little attention to makeup or prosthetics to reflect the passage of time. Despite my slight criticisms of the production value, there were moments in the film that touched me...
